This car is owned by one of my oldest friends who is also the webmaster. He purchased this car in high school and we were all envious of it, as it was by far the nicest looking car in school. Not long after it was involved in a serious rear end collision. The repairs although nice on the outside were very sub-standard where it counts. He enjoyed the car for a few more years. It was involved in yet another accident which crushed the right front fender, inner and outer rocker, right torque box, and fire wall before it was placed in long term storage. 22 years later this is what was uncovered. After the drive train and suspension were removed the cars inner structure was sand blasted. New inner rockers, torque boxes, floor pans, lower firewall, doors, quarter panels wheel houses, rear frame rails, trunk floor , rear crossmember, and one fender. Surprisingly the front inner structure was still sound. If the previous repairs to the car had been done correctly maybe the second accident would not have been so severe. Most Mustang convertibles from the mid-west suffer from inner rocker corrosion, this car was no exception. This car had sheet metal pop riveted over the rusted areas long ago. It has now been removed and all new steel is being installed. I sandblast all new inner panels to remove any surface rust. This also abrades the metal so that epoxy primer can be applied. This step is done before any assembly takes place. After it is welded in place and the structure of the car is sound again it will be placed on the rotisserie so that all of the work can be performed with ease. |
